THE INDIAN NAVY
With a large coast of about 7600 km, a number of island territories from East to West, and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.2 million sq. km., Indian Navy faces multifarious challanges in meeting the Nations maritime intersets and security aspects. The 55000 strong naval force with aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines, frigates, corneltes, missile crafts, etc needs continuous upgradation and preparedness.
Intensive surveillance require highly integrated system of extensive patrolling by ships , aircrafts and helicopters against landing of arms, explosives, contraband, illegal immigration, piracy etc.
For the training of Naval cadets a new ship INS Krishna has been acquired and commissioned in Aug 1995.
Weapons & Electronic System Engg. Estt. (WESEE) along with DRDO labs/estts have developed highly sophisticated state-of-the-art sonars, radars and other naval systems. Realising critical dependence on the sea conditions, Navy METOC (Meteorology and Oceanography) heeps in close touch with voyages of SAGARKANYA of National Institute of Oceanography.
Coast Guard
This organisation was set up in 1978 for preservation and protection of the country's Exclusive Economic Zone ( EEZ). The Coast Guard is responsible for keeping the EEZ measuring over 2.2 million sq. km under regular surveillance to prevent poaching/smuggling and other illegal activities .
Besides, its duties include pollution control at sea, Search and Rescue Operation ( SAR) and protection of the maritime enviroment.
