THE INDIAN ARMY

The Indian Army had its origin in 1627 when Mughal Emperor Jehangir recognised the armed wing of the East India Company as a naval anxiliary of Mughal Empire. The Army grew in size to 2,70,000 by 1857 when, after the first war of independence, it came under the direct control of the British Crown.

After independence, the primary task of the Army is to safeguard the territorial integrity of the nation against external threat securing land borders and island territories. Besides, Army helps the civil authorities in peace for maintenance of Law and Order; organising relief activities during natural or otherwise calamities and provide Forces to International peace-keeping missions.

The Army is presently a million-strong and keeps fit always through rigorous training and modernisation of its weapons and equipment. It has the State-of-the-art weapons and equipment and has computerised various activities and systems.
