Dr W Selvamurthy, Distinguished Scientist, has been appointed CC R&D (Life Sciences) & CC R&D (Human Resources) w.e.f. 1 July 2003. Born in 1949, he did his post-graduation in Human Physiology from Christian Medical College, Vellore in 1972 and PhD from University of Delhi in 1982.
Dr Selvamurthy joined DRDO in 1973 and during the 30 years of service in DRDO. He has had a meritorious career and became Director in the year 1992 and held this position for 10 years. He has personally made significant research contributions for the benefit of the soldiers in the fields related to Physiological acclimatisation at high altitude; Application of yoga for the Armed forces; discovered a drug to save war casualties subjected to severe hemorrhage; Psychological stress and its management. and a new contraceptive from Neem oil. He was the leader of the First Indo-Soviet Scientific Expedition to the Arctic for physiological experiments(1990-91).
Dr Selvamurthy has 12 books
and 150 research papers to his credit.
He was elected Fellow of
Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists (1990) and
Fellow of Indian Academy of Yoga(2002) and held many
important positions in various scientific bodies. He is
President-Federation of Indian Physiological Societies;
Vice President-Indian Association of Biomedical
Scientists; Secretary-Delhi Chapter of Association of
Physiologists & Pharmacologists of India; Advisor to
Executive Board of International Society of
biometeorology; Finance Secretary-Federation of Indian
Physiological Societies.
In recognition of his outstanding research
contributions, he has been honoured with the prestigious
Research Awards from different prestigious organisations.
